Good evening! I am still at school at almost 6 pm, but for a very good reason. Today, Creative Writing Club hosted local author Joyce Hill who talked about her first novel she recently published called A Penny in My Pocket.  She began by giving us all a wheat penny and shared how she got the idea for her book. Then, she spoke about the creative process of developing characters through research, finding her own publishing company and marketing her novel. I’m really excited about this book. It’s geared towards fifth grade and has lots of historical information about different decades in American History.  Here’s a brief overview of the book from her website:Teachers and Parents:

Imagine…using a simple penny to teach social studies, language arts, math, science and more.

A Penny in My Pocket uses a search for old pennies to parallel present day students with characters from various periods in 20th century U.S. history. While fun and informative for any age, it is particularly designed for children ages 9-12. The pennies carry the reader back to the wave of immigration, through the epidemic of Influenza, The Great War, the Harlem Renaissance, The Depression, and World War II.

Here’s what we did in class today:

Juniors: We had our vocabulary quiz #4 and then I divided the class into two groups for our Transcendentalism Literary Circles. Each group has 15 minutes to read two-three poems, discuss them with your group, and answer each question for each poem. You will be working on this Thursday, as well, and it is worth a quiz grade. In blue is the link to the packet that you received in class — no one can take this home –as it is a classwork assignment but you are going to need copies of these poems for the test next week on Transcendentalism.  transcendentalismpoetrycircles.doc

Sophomores: We had student guests from AP Language that spoke to you about the class, expectations, and work load. I also spoke to you about how I would be doing recommendations for next year’s English class. Then, we watched a little of the A&E biography on Shakespeare. HW: None

See you tomorrow! Tomorrow, remember to come to class, let me take roll and then we’ll go to Northview’s annual Black History Month assembly.

Have a great night!

No make-up work today for all classes. We attended the advanced drama production’s class of “Teenage” about teen life: dating, school, relationships, etc. It was really cute and well-done!  Go Jessie!! It was fun to see you act again!

Have an absolutely fabulous three day weekend!
