Good evening! I hope you guys were little angels for Mrs. Vogel today. I would love to go to my desk tomorrow morning and read her glowing notes about how wonderful you were for her. As for me, I got lots of sleep Monday and Tuesday and drank tons of OJ and water, so I am feeling better and ready to tackle the rest of the week.

Here’s what the plans were for today in case you missed it.

Juniors: You received a study guide that you were to work on with your groups all period. I wrote on the board on Monday before I left the literature that this test is covering. If you complete your study guide, review with PROPER reading strategies all the literature, and listen tomorrow in class for the review, you should be fine for the test on Thursday. HW: Finish your study guide – it’s a quiz grade. And, your Laws of Life essay is due tomorrow. See Monday’s post for detailed instructions and a helpful web-link.

Sophomores: The plans were for you to work within your assigned groups and select a “recorder” to write down detailed notes of your discussion. You were to go through Ch. 9-12 and discuss your notes that you took yesterday in class. The recorder’s notes were to be turned in at the end of the period for a CW grade. HW: None.

Email me if you didn’t understand any of the info. I gave Mrs. Vogel, our sub.

Thanks for your well-wishes. I feel so much better, not 100% but a lot better.

See you guys tomorrow!

Love,

Mrs. B

Monday, 2/4

Hi all! Good news to report…my cold has subsided and I’m starting to feel more human again. I definitely used my sick day wisely — lots of OJ and rest has made me ready to tackle the rest of the week with you. :)

Okay, so here’s what we did Monday. Since I went home sick, fourth period and sixth period had a sub, but I was there for first thru third period.

American Lit. – I passed out two handouts: one had a list of Laws of Life on one side and the Laws of Life essay writing instructions on the other side. The other one you received was the Laws of Life entry form and parent permission slip. As stated in class, if you turn in your essay on Wed. 2/6 without your entry form, you will receive a maximum of a 50% on your essay.

I’ve had some questions in class and via email that I want to answer here in case you need help:

Q. How long does it have to be?

A. Minimum 1 1/2 pages and Maximum is 2 1/2 pages.

Q. How many copies do I need? Do they look different from each other?

You need two copies — one to enter for the contest and one to turn into Mrs. Breaux. The one to enter DOES NOT have your name on it. Just a title centered in the middle of the page and your essay. The second copy that is being turned into Mrs. Breaux has an MLA heading and title. If you forgot to do this, you’re going to have to google: Owl at Perdue and look for examples.  Both copies should be double-spaced and typed. No handwritten copies will be accepted.

Q.  Do I have to use one of the aphorisms/maxims/laws of life that you gave us on the handout?

A. You can but you don’t HAVE TO. You can google quotes that you like and use those.

Q. Can I enter this contest as anonymous?

A. No, by signing the entry form you and your parents indicate that it’s okay that it gets published.

Q. Are you going to embarrass me by reading it aloud in class?

A. No.  But, if you write about something that raises a concern with me, it is my duty and obligation as a teacher to let your guidance counselor know about it so that we can work together to help you.

Q. Do you have any sample essays I can look at to help me?

A. Yes. Go to this website and read sample essays from the winners from last year:

http://www.georgialawsoflife.org/laws.asp

If you have any more questions, please email me.

Sophomores – Monday, 2/4

I gave you time in class to read Ch. 10-12 and finish LOTF. You were also given the assignment to write three post-it annotations from each chapter – Ch. 9,10,11, 12 for tomorrow’s discussion. You should have a total of 12 different annotations by the time you’re done.

HW: None. Finish annotations if you didn’t finish them in class. Vocabulary Quiz for LOTF words #1-25 postponed until this Thursday.
